ILA Dock Checker Killed at Work
Posted On: Apr 02, 2012

Reports coming thus far indicate that a cargo of steel rods was being discharged utilizing ship's gear from at least two hatches, and that shoreside forklift trucks were yarding from the bunks. The checker was said to be working at one of the hatches, noting and recording cargo marks, when a forklift picking up and transporting the steel rod cargo being discharged from another hatch struck her. The operator of the forklift was apparently moving in a forward direction when the accident occurred.  It is not reported as to whether the forward vision of the forklift's operator was obscured (or to what degree) at the time of the accident.

Please be careful working around large machinery.  A careless mistake can be a disaster, no difference who makes it.
